The Battle for the Holocaust raises controversial questions about how the world perceives the Nazi extermination. In this film, Jewish historians look at how our understanding of the Holocaust has changed in the five decades since the end of the Second World War and ask whose agenda is being served by the proliferation of museums, memorials and commemoration events.

Come celebrate ArgusFest’s 8 years are raising awareness of human rights, social justice, media, and environmental issues with some great music and performers including:

Paper Bird

Paper Bird’s backbone is their songwriting, musicianship and a general allergy to all limitations and trends. With seven members and no leader, this band is pulled in every direction imaginable, but thanks to their unique instrumentation they are able to merge their spontaneous creativity into one, solid sound.

The female vocals create a soulful, dynamic harmony that accentuates each singer, while giving the illusion of a single voice. The trombone, banjo, and guitar elevate the music to a higher level while the skilled notes of the bass reflect the harmonies. Each style bounces off the other, while each note appreciates the other. They make audiences feel love, excitement, and passion. A show not to be missed, a band that must be heard: Paper Bird is one of a kind. http://www.myspace.com/paperthebird

Sparlha Swa

Described as Sade and Tracey Chapman drinking coconuts in Brazil…on the beach…no straws.

The genre-splitting vocals and lyrically-potent songwriting of rising artist Sparlha Swa offers us an alternative music that is truly honest and evocatively so; sparse, powerful and to the point.

Sparlha’s songs are simple yet profound, soulful and resonant on the level of spirit. Born in Kingston, Jamaica, the artist pulls her inspiration from around the globe with mentors like Sade, Astrud Gilberto, Miriam Makeba and Ravi Shankar. http://www.myspace.com/sparlhaswa

Jonny 5 (from the Flobots)

Founding member of Denver’s hottest hip-hop band The Flobots and the non-profit http://www.flobots.org/, Jonny 5 raps with style and progressive messages of human rights and social justice inspiring a whole new generation of critically thinking and feeling souls.

Ukulele Loki (solo set)

Described as sepia-chord, indie-pan alley, and melancholy Brechtian carnival rock, Ukulele Loki is like nothing you’ve seen before. He is sure to charm your heart.

Doo Crowder (from Pee Pee)

Doo Crowder leads Denver’s indie band Pee Pee. His heart is only matched by his energy and eagerness to get the audience singing. http://www.myspace.com/doocrowder

YeYe*Organic*Pop

YEYE*ORGANIC*POP from Mexico City sings with passion and purpose to bring the joy of life through music to her audiences.

http://www.myspace.com/yeyeorganicpop

Vampira (from Vox Feminista)
If you don’t know about Vox Feminista you are seriously missing out. They are Colorado’s funniest and wittiest political satire group. Vox’s Vampira will provide some comment on the state of the world.

Art from Ashes

As an elementary school teacher for more than twenty years and a pioneer in teacher education, Albert Cullum galvanized students and shook up parents through the use of poetry, drama and imaginative play. Cullum championed a radical educational philosophy that spoke directly to his student’s hearts through his passionate use of poetry and drama including literary masterpieces from Shakespeare, Sophocles, and Shaw. Cullum went well beyond the textbook and instead allowed his students to find their own inspiration in the works while discovering new heights of originality and joy in learning.

Sullivan’s one-of-a-kind film weaves rare archival television broadcasts and remarkable vintage footage from films documenting these projects (several recorded in the early 1960’s by Robert Downey Sr., the director of the 60’s independent classic Putney Swope), as well as recent interviews with Cullum, Downey, and Cullum’s students. What emerges is an inspiring portrait of a maverick teacher who transformed a generation of young people by enabling them to discover their own inner greatness through the power of learning. At a time when the American educational system is under scrutiny, this film is an important look at where it has been and an inspiration for where it can go.

In reflecting upon his time spent in the Israeli army, filmmaker Ari Folman has produced WALTZ WITH BASHIR, a profoundly moving antiwar meditation that is equal parts personal memoir, history lesson, and animated fever dream. In 1982, Folman was a soldier during Israel’s first invasion of Lebanon. This was a painful moment in history, when the newly elected president of Lebanon, Bashir Gemayel, was killed in an explosion. Furious, his party, the Christian Phalangists, retaliated by storming into the Sabra and Shatila refugee camps and massacring thousands of innocent victims. Over 20 years later, Folman is disturbed to realize that he has no memory of this incident even though he was there at the time. In order to remember, he tracks down several of his friends and soldiers who were there with him to find out what really happened. WALTZ WITH BASHIR is as difficult to categorize as it is to forget. It is a truly startling achievement, a film that can be classified as animation and documentary and history and fiction. It is all of those things at once, and it is also much more than that. Folman uses a combination of Flash animation, 3D, and classic animation to bring his film to visual life, but it is the beautifully haunting score by acclaimed German composer Max Richter that provides the film with its heart and soul. As WALTZ WITH BASHIR unfolds in dreamlike waves, Folman understands that guilt is a dangerous thing, and war is even worse.

In 200,000 years on earth humanity has upset the balance of the planet, established by nearly four billion years of evolution. HOME is peculiar in that it is a multinational corporate funded film about “human” impact on the planet but is really about corporation’s impact on the planet. Human’s are mere tools for this destruction. Of course the film doesn’t say all this but it does vividly show both the beauty of our planet and our recent impact upon it. A healthy discussion will follow the screening.

American Outrage documents the fight of two grandmothers, Carrie Dann and Mary Dann, against the U.S. government’s unlawful attempts to take over traditional Shoshone land in Nevada, part of 60 millions acres guaranteed to them in the 1863 Treaty of Ruby Valley. Over the years the Dann sisters have endured steady harassment from the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and they have squared off against international gold mining corporations and the nuclear industry. Their courage and perseverance in asserting the rights of indigenous peoples have brought them numerous awards, including the 1993 Alternative Nobel Prize and the International Right Livelihood Award.

Followed by Q&A with a representative from the Native American Rights Fund (NARF)
